A deserted clearing in the woods. An unsuspecting passerby. A fatal encounter.

Death plays the violin, and today is his practice day. Death’s latest composition will surprise and horrify any who hear it. Featuring macabre puppetry and an eerie live soundscape, Death and the Carpenter is a new gothic folk tale for grown-ups, written by Sonia Overall.

The piece explores the relationship of the Hoodening custom to the landscape of its origin through walking and embodied experience, spoken word, and the re-visioning of archival material and traditional music.
It was filmed on location in East Kent in January 2023 and screened in the exhibition from February – June 2023.

The film can now be viewed on YouTube.
